Where you work
You read and edit your investigation in your browser. Before saving online, your browser locks the contents with encryption.
Primary save Online by default
Encrypted Online Case File
BlackMold stores an encrypted copy online so you can return to your work. We don’t have the secret needed to read its contents. Your first save is complete only when the server confirms it.
Protected fallback Encrypted in this browser
Browser recovery copy
Your browser keeps an encrypted recovery copy of your work. If an online save is interrupted, this copy protects edits saved here. Clearing browser data can remove it.
Kept by you Never uploaded
Your unlock secret
Your account secret unlocks personal cases in your browser. Shared cases use a separate secret. Neither is uploaded to BlackMold. Keep them safe. We can’t reset them or unlock your investigation for you.
Your choice Approved beta users
People you share with
You choose which approved beta users can access a shared case. Permission lets them download the encrypted copy, but they also need the shared case secret to read it in their browser. Send that secret separately, outside BlackMold.
Portable copy Your choice
Optional encrypted file
You can download an encrypted investigation file to keep your own copy. Downloading it does not remove the online copy. When you open the file, you can keep it local or save it as a new personal case online.
Keep your secret safe. We can’t reset it or recover your investigation if you lose it.
What we can see: Account emails, sharing permissions, basic storage information, and a label for shared cases that contains no sensitive information. We cannot see the contents of your investigation.
